What it means to be a Smart Blogger

We have just started our blogs. We now need to learn what it takes to be a 'smart blogger'. The key thing to remember when you post is - your blog has an audience and it is a way to share your learning. 
As you post, check to see if you are doing the following.

Welcome back and looking forward

This week has been a good start to the term.  All students came back to school with an eagerness to get into their learning.

The key learning this week has included the following: Identifying the main ideas in a text and finding detail that support it. To do this we have used concept maps. Next week students will be aiming to do this independently with text they read.
 In writing all students have chosen one holiday experience to share and are focusing the detail of their writing around two main events. One group is learning to have a variety of sentence beginnings and another group is learning to use clever linking phrases between paragraphs to assist and entertain the reader. By mid next week their published recounts should be on their blog. Be sure to read them and leave a positive comment!
In mathematics the class focus has been on reading and counting large numbers, 100, 10 and 1 before and after. We have also looked at creating our own bar models to assist in understanding word problems and the different strategies we can use to multiply three digit numbers.

Next week we kick of speech writing! Speeches must have have persuasive or explanation structure and students are to choose the topic they want. Class competitions will be in Week 5. Following that the top speakers will compete at a school assembly with the winners (two from each class) competing in the Rotary Speech Competition.

This term we are also learning about different dance elements. We are creating a dance that depicts the creation story in Genesis. Dates of school production are yet to be confirmed.

For te  reo Maori, our morning routine students are taking a more active roll this term. They are learning how to lead karakia, himene, waiata and mihi. This can be quite challenging for some students. With support and encouragement all will achieve success.

Lastly, school cross-country is coming up! Students will be working towards personalized fitness goals. With this, along with netball (Wednesdays) and pakena (Fridays) we will be having a good amount of Physical Education.

Our Little DJ!

Here is a recount and a video clip of Tiffany as a DJ for the day. We are really proud of her. Her mother entered her into online draw through a new New World competition. Her name was randomly chosen. I hope you enjoy this outstanding recount.

Radio Station Visit

“Welcome Tiffany!”Flash, the lady radio host, welcomed me with open arms. I smiled at her, shook her
hand and hugged her. John and Toast got a handshake too. John, the bald man, showed me all of
the sound and tone buttons. He also controls the weather report. The daily schedule was all planned
on his tablet.Toast, the one with dreadlocks, was the radio jokester. He played around a lot and was a
really good sport.

“Our wonderful guest DJ will speak over the More FM 91.6 radio after Bruno Mars’ Locked Out Of
Heaven.” John announced.My stomach was a petting zoo! Tingling with not only butterflies, but birds
and spiders. In and out Tiffany, in and out, I told myself.

Flash adjusted the speaker that lay in front of me. I was a 50-50 of nervousness and excitement. “And now,
Tiffany has a recipe for Toast’s cookbook…”“TOAST!” My unease drifted away like dust, my fear was
gone. 100% excitement bubbled inside me.

In the end I explained how AMAZING my school is and how i love working there.

I loved that day, I even got a certificate and a $25 New World gift card!

Ki O Rahi Tournament 2018

Last week we learned how to play ki o rahi. We love it! We entered a team into the Kaikohe Ki o Rahi Tournament today and really enjoyed playing a whole bunch of schools. It was a great opportunity to build whanangatanga with other schools.

I am really pleased to say the entire class (excluding one girl with a arm cast and one boy) participated. Everyone was so keen for game time!

Tiffany's First Animation

I taught some skills around basic animation using slides. Students were given the task of creating a DLO (digital learning object) that showed something they learned from our field trip in Week 4. Here is Tiffany's

School Trip Lake Omapere & Mt Putahi

In Week 4 Year 1 - 6 students went on a trip to Mt Putahi and Lake Omapere.
We are investigating how changes from our past impact us today. Here is a video that shows aspects of that day. In class we are currently doing further research and creating storyboards for an animation to share what we have learned about theses areas.
We are so thankful to the wonderful trustees of Lake Omapere Trust for taking time out to share what they know.

One way we are getting to know one another better is by thinking about what makes us unique. We have all written BIO poems to share with others.
